Purim is a Jewish holiday in which people dress up in costumes and celebrate their joy in street parades.
During this holiday, people consume large amounts of alcohol. In Orthodox communities, it is believed that alcohol consumption encourages compassion and mercies toward others. They believe alcohol helps a person overcome the inner defense mechanisms that make it difficult for us to empathize and feel compassion for someone, even if they are an enemy. The drinking habit on this day often brings chaos: kids smoke and parents get drunk. Some people drink until they lose their minds.
